Rare source for the literary history of Friesland

PETRI, Suffridus (Sjoerd Pietersz.).
De scriptoribus Frisiae, decades XVI. Et semis: in quibus non modo peculiares Frisiae, sed & totius Germaniae communes antiquitates plurimae indicantur, & veterum historicorum ac geographorum loci, hactenus non intellecti, explicantur.

Franeker, Jacobus Horreus, 1699. 12mo. Contemporary plain vellum; spine lettered in ink. (88), 498 pp.

Rare second edition of this important work on the Frisian authors. The original edition had been published more than a century ago, in 1593 at Cologne. Suffridus Petri (1527-1597) was one of the most famous scholars of his time. He was professor Classical languages at the University of Erfurt (1557), secretary and librarian of Granvelle (1562) and professor in Cologne (1577). He has also lived many years in Groningen and Friesland. As the official historian of Friesland he envisaged a great work on the history of Friesland. Only parts of it have been finished and published, for instance his famous De Frisiorum antiquitate et origine libri tres (Cologne 1590; Franeker 1698). present work is originally also meant to be a subdivision of the greater work. It describes the lives and works of 165 Frisian authors. By listing as much works of his authors as he could, the book has become one of the most important bibliographical  sources for the history of Friesland.

At the same time it is also the first bibliography ever exclusively devoted to Dutch authors.

Good copy with the engraved bookplate of the 'Biblioteca del duque de Medinaceli y Santisteban' on the verso of the front cover. - (Library stamp on the verso of the title removed).
NNBW, V, cols. 498-9; Bibliography. Its history and devel. (Grolier club, 1984) 39.
