Amsterdam, Paulus Matthysz. for Dirck Pietersz. Pers, (1647). 4to. Contemporary overlapping vellum with title written on spine. With engraving on title (85 x 120 mm) of a lion caught in a net, woodcut initials and centre piece. (20), 911, (23) pp.

Rare first and only edition of the very enlarged edition of Pers' De ontstelde Leeuw, from 1641, with De verwarde adelaer (pp. 1-138) newly added. Dirck Pietersz. Pers (1580-1662), is a reformed bookseller/publisher in Amsterdam and poet who wished his book to be considered as a kind of introduction to the editions of Everhard van Reyd's Nederlandsche oorloghen en geschiedenissen in the 1640s.
The Ontstelde leeuw treats the history of the Dutch Revolt against Spain from 1560 till 1581; in this enlarged edition together with De verwarde adelaer Pers starts in the time of Luther (ca. 1517) to elucidate the origin and roots of the sixteenth-century reformation, one of the causes of the revolt, to 1584, the year William the Silent of Orange was murdered.

Good copy of this rare work.
Van der Aa VI, p. 63.
