Famous Dutch reading book for children from 3 to 5 years old, written by Willem Emmery de Perponcher (1741-1819) for the first general  instruction of his own children. As the author explains in his preface, the children can start on it right after  their first A B book, which he himself also had composed for his children and published under the title "Nieuw Nederduitsch Spelleboek".
The present schoolbook contains spelling and reading exercises, with dialogues and poems on morals and social behaviour, conversations and poems on all sorts of human occupations and professions, discussions on the products of nature, etc. The author used for his models similar educational books by Campe, Basedow, Madame de la Fite, etc., also including poems by Hieronymus van Alphen, Pieter 't Hoen a.o. After these readings the author states, the children should continue with the reading of "Het Vaderlandsch A B Boek", Campe's "Robinson Crusoe", and "L'Ami des Enfants" by Berquin. Only after that the author would allow the children to read books on history and geography.
Perponcher's work is a fine example of the great importance and personal care enlightened men in the second half of the 18th century attached to education. The 19th century Dutch popular novelist, Jacob van Lennep, was so enthousiast about the work of Perponcher that he had it again republished in 1863.
