On the life and martyrdom of a Jesuit missionary from Lisbon

(52), 250 pp. First and only edition of a biography on the Jesuit missionary Juan de Britto (Lisbon 1647 - Oriur, India 1693), written by his brother Fernao Pereira de Britto. Juan was born in Lisbon and entered the Jesuit order on 17th December 1662. He departed on a mission for Goa, India, in 1673, and arrived at Maduré, India, in 1674. On the 4th of February 1693, he died as a martyr at Oriur. Pope Pius IX sanctified him 18th May 1852. This biography was dedicated to The King of Portugal, Joaö V by De Britto's nephew Ferdinando de la Cueva e Mendoça (pp. (3-6)). After the preface (pp. (7-8)), 'Licença's', (the first by Fr. Antonio da Expectaçaö, dated Lisbon 13 February 1721, pp. (9-11)), 'imprimaturs', privileges, etc. (pp. (12-14)), follow many laudatory poems and epigrams by Josephus de Murica, Emmanuel Vieyra, Mathias Correa, Petrus Rangel, Xaverius de Lima, Petrus de Almeyda, Gregorius Barreto, and poems and 100 numbered epigrams by his brother Prof. Ludovicus Pereyra with the title "Palmam Triumphalem ven. patris Joannis de Britto Societas Jesu sanguine irrigatam erigit P. Ludovicus Pereyra et in folia explicat quibus Martyris sanguinem, Victoris triumphos, Joannis vitam, amici fidem, fratris amorem circumscribit" (pp. (15-50)). On pp. (51-52) is the contents.: the book is divided in three parts: (1) the life of Juan de Britto till his departure to India, (2) his stay in India, and (3) his marthyrdom. At the end are printed several letters by and written about Juan de Britto, with the title "Verdadeyras imagens do V. padre Joaö de Britto": (1) 2 letters by Thyrso Gonzales (1690-1692; pp. 237-240); (2) 6 letters by Britto to his brother Fernando Pereyra de Britto (1690 - 1692; pp. 240-245). (3) 6 letters by De Britto to Joaö da Casta SJ, written from the Malabar coast (1691 - 1693; pp. 245-247); (4) a letter by De Britto to Manoel Rodrigues, Provincial da Provincia do Malabar, Ceo, 30 July 1686 (p. 247-248), (5) a letter by De Britti to his brother Luis Pereyra SJ, Missaö de Madurey, 23 May 1692 (pp. 248-249), and (6) the last letter De Britto wrote from his cell the day before he died: ''Carta escrita do carcere ao P. Francisco Laynes superior da missao de Maduré, a 3 de Fevereiro de 1693'' (p. 250) ... Good copy.- (Front hinge partly loose, some scratches on both sides).
