Lyon, H. Cardon, 1603. Contemporary limp vellum, title in ink on spine, traces of ties. With large woodcut vignette on title, title-page printed in red and black, woodcut headpiece and initials. (10), 253, (8) pp.

Rare work of Benedictus Pererius (1535-1610) in which he gives his Jesuit view on magic, astronomy and occult matters. In his life Pererius taught philosophy at the Roman college of the Jesuits. He was known for his warnings against magic and his commentaries on the Bible. It was Pererius who redefined the meaning of scientific speculation by distinguishing a general ontology from the special ontology which later was to split into the science of spirits (pneumatologia) and the science of finite corporal beings, i.e. physics.
