Paris, Ex officina Plantiniana apud Hadrien Perier, 1610. 4to. Contemporary vellum, ribbed spine decorated in gilt spine, large gilt coat-of-arms of Amsterdam in the centre, 4 smaller arms of Amsterdam as corner pieces, and gilt borders on both sides, sprinkled edges. Engraved vignette with the coats of arms of the French king Henry IV on title, woodcut head- and end pieces, woodcut initials. (16), 730 pp.

First edition of this historical treatise on the history and significance of crowns with innumerable citations and references to the classical authors. The book was published by Adrien Perier, the agent of the establishment of the Plantin publishing house at Paris which was active there from 1567 till 1629. There is also an issue with the imprint: Paris, Chevalerius, 1610. A second edition was published in 1671 at Johannes van Gelder in Leyden (second issue: 1681).
Charles Paschal (1547-1625) was a French diplomat, negotiator and antiquary. He went to Paris in 1575 and from there he was sent to Poland as an ambassador in 1576 by Henry III. He also served King Henry IV of France - to whom the work is dedicated - as ambassador to England in 1589. He died in 1625 on his estate near Abbeville. Other works he wrote are Christianarum praecum libri duo (Caen, Jacob le Bas, 1592) and Fabricii Pibrachii vita (Paris, R. Columbellum, in Aldina bibliotheca, 1584).
Our copy belonged to the library of Adrianus Marinus Ledeboer (1797-1887), the well-known Dutch bibliographer and bibliophile. He wrote his name on the inside of the front cover and probably also the notes on Charles Paschal on the verso of the second fly-leaf (NNBW III, col. 744).

Good copy.
