Second edition of the journal of a voyage in search of a northwest passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific by Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855). Parry was one of the earliest and greatest explorers of the Arctic. Between 1818 and 1827 Parry commanded five expeditions to the Arctic, and reached farther north than any other explorer to that time.
In 1818 he was appointed to command the Alexander, one of the two ships of the first voyage of John Ross in search of a northwest passage. Ross' expedition of 1818 had called at Lancaster Sound to the north of Baffin Island, which Ross, having seen a mirage of mountains at its far end, regarded as a closed inlet. Parry, however, disagreed and took the opinion that the sound could provide the very opening to the western sea they were seeking. Following interviews with Lord Melville, the Admiralty equipped two ships, the Hecla under the command of Parry and the Griper under Lieutenant Matthew Liddon. Parry's expedition sailed from Deptford on 11 May 1819, the ships stocked with anti-scorbutic and nutritious canned foods. In September Parry reached his furthest west, 112o51'W, near a headland called Cape Providence. With winter descending upon the expedition, Parry retreated east and reached the winter quarters. In August 1820 Parry finely decided to give up the westward advance and resolved to run for Lancaster Island while the seas were clear and the ships returned safely to Peterhead in Scotland, where they arrived on 31 October 1820. From there Parry hurried to London to deliver his reports where he was received as a hero.
The Journal, based on Parry's reports, appeared in 1821, the rights having been bought by the publisher John Murray for a thousand guineas. In the same year a second edition was needed (our copy), and a German translation was published, followed by a Dutch and French translation in 1822 (Howgego).
Added is the very rare separately published complete text of the 21 issues of:
The North Georgia Gazette and Winter Cronicle. London, William Clowes for John Murray, 1821. 4to. Original half calf. 132 pp.
Through the long arctic winter, Parry did everything possible to keep his crew occupied. There was constant activity, plays were acted at the 'Royal Arctic Theatre' and Edward Sabine, one of the crew members, edited this periodical journal in handwriting, containing all sorts of stories, poems and news, here presented in the original edition printed in 1821 of the complete set of the issues 1 (Monday, November 1st 1819) - 21 (Monday, March 20, 1820).
Our copy with the autograph signature of Captain Parry, pasted in the first fly-leaf: "Admit the bearer, W.E. Parry".

Very good copy with the engraved book-plate of Samuel Neale, with his coat of arms, pasted to the verso of the dedication.- (Leather of front cover sl. damaged).
