On the accusations towards Romeyn de Hooghe

Woodcut on title, woodcut initials.

Haarlem, Romulus ab Alto, 1690. 4to. Unbound. Woodcut on title, woodcut initials. 39, (1) pp.

Very interesting pamphlet containing a defence of Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), the most significant and prolific Dutch engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century, against the crimes and gossips of which he is suspected, especially in the treatise Vindicae Amstelodamensis. De Hooghe, a fierce Orangist, had made many caricatures and cartoons in the disadvantage of the patriotic Amsterdam magistrates and also (highly) erotical prints, and he was accused of blasphemy, adultery, atheism and other crimes. On May 12, 1690 De Hooghe was summoned to appear before the Haarlem court and bailiff Backer. In the end the local government of Haarlem would force the bailiff to end the case.
Very interesting for the political and private standards, morality and values in the Dutch Republic during the Golden Age.
Fair uncut copy.- (Margins frayed, last page loose, some staining).
