Pamphlet against the ultra-orthodox minister Adriaan Smout
![]() ![]() Rotterdam, Matijs Bastiaensz. (1613). 4to. Sewn, stitches loosening. Woodcut ornament on title, woodcut end-piece. (32) pp. Original and only edition of an anonymous pamphlet on religious matters as advocated by the Remonstrants, published in answer to a strictly orthodox pamphlet by the ultra-orthodox minister Adraan Smout (Rotterdam ca. 1580-1646). He had dedicated his pamphlet to the - at that time Remonstrant inclined - States of Holland, to which he inter alia maintained that they should punish heresy, blasphemy etc. with the death penalty. The States, as the magistrate of Rotterdam (which had forbidden the publication of the pamphlet), were not amused and Smout was banished to 's-Gravezande. Smout had written his incited text after the so-called 'Scriptural Conference', held at Delft in 1613 at the instigation of Count Willem Lodewijk of Orange. Participants had been the Remonstrants Uitenbogaert, Grevinchoven, and van der Borre at one side, and the orthodox, Contra-Remonstrants Bogardus, Becius, and Festus Hommius at the other. Five examples of difference in opinion were discussed and the answers to these differences ('yes' or 'no') touched the fundaments of the reformed religion. The conference did not solve the questions, and the conflict between the two groups only was sharpened. The present pamphlet, in mild but firm language, pleads for tolerance and peace within the Dutch Church, i.c for a Remonstrant 'no' in stead of Smout's 'yes'. Smout was called to Amsterdam in 1620 and was minister there till in 1630 he was removed by the Amsterdam magistrate to the pleasure of Vondel who has mocked Smout many times. Good copy of a rare and interesting pamphlet.
