Elshof and engraved by J. Smit. (40), 88 pp. Third enlarged edition of these laudatory verses by Johan d'Outrein (1662-1720) in praise of the House of Roosendaal and its beautiful gardens, in those days the property of Johan of Arnhem, Lord of Roosendaal, famous for its grandness and many nice fountains, bridges and garden ornaments. Johan of Arnhem was a hunting friend of Stadholder-King William III, while their spouses shared an interest in embroidery. Even when William III became King of England he returned repeatedly to Roosendael for the hunt. In the garden a summerhouse was built before 1688, dedicated to and paid for by Mary Stuart, depicted on the engravings nrs. 4 and 5. The design has been attributed to Daniel Marot. The poems are illustrated with 19 beautiful engravings and a large plan. The work was first published in 1700 (without plates) and again in 1712/3 (very rare) and as the third much enlarged edition the present 1718 edition, which is by far the best. D'Outrein was minister in Franeker (1687), where he also was appointed as librarian of the University Library; Arnhem (1691), where he came in contact with the Lord and Lady of Roosendaal; Dordrecht (1703) and Amsterdam (1708). One of the poet/ministers he is generally considered as one of the best of the decades around the turn of the century.
