Plantin, 1571. 4to. Contemporary vellum. Woodcut printer's device on title. (20), 340 lvs. First edition of a history of Flanders from the year 620 to Charles the Bold, 1476, by Pierre d'Oudegherst, or Oudegherste, a Flemish historian (1540-1592). The author had studied law at the Louvain University, and became a lawyer at Brussels. He travelled twice to Germany, where he worked at the Court of Maximilan II, and later to Spain, where he died. As explained in the preface, the author wrote the present history to improve on the somewhat heavy and too extensive history written by his contemporary, Antonius de Meyere, published in 1556, also by Plantin. D'Oudegherst promised a second volume which would bring the history up to his day, but this volume was never published. The privilege to the work, dated June 1571, was granted to Clara Wits, the wife of the author who at that time was in Germany. Plantin had accepted to publish the history, but was at that time so busy with the Polyglot Bible and the service books for Spain that he had the actual printing done by his Antwerp colleague, Jan Withagen, or Verwithagen, using Plantin's type, as is acknowledged on an extra colophon-leaf at the end of the preliminaries. D'Oudegherst's history of Flanders was later much valued, and in 1785 a Flemish edition appeared, with the history continued unto 1781. In 1789 a French translation was also published, enlarged with extensive notes and comments. Today the first edition is very rare. Good copy.- (Binding sl. stained, with marginal dam. to lower front cover).
