The 'Vijfherenlanden' in contemporary colouring

OTTENS, Reinier & Josua.
Nieuwe kaart van de Vyf Heeren landen gelegen tusschen den Dief en Zouwen dyk.

Amsterdam, Reinier & Joshua Ottens, 1741. (Ca. 85 x 100 cm). Framed.

Very rare map on four sheets of the 'Vijfheerenlanden', the region south of Utrecht and south of the river Lek between Vianen and Leerdam, engraved by J. van Jagen and beautifully coloured by a contemporary hand. The map was listed in a stock catalogue, which the Otten firm issued in ca. 1745. To most maps in this catalogue the name of the publisher is added. The present map, however, is listed without a publisher, suggesting that it was published anonymously. According to Fockema Andreae the map was issued anonymously ("naamloos uitgegeven") indeed. Our map, therefore, may be an unrecorded second state, with the imprint added.

Fine poldermap in contemporary colouring.
