Paris, Lacombe, 1768. 2 vols. 8vo. Contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with brown morocco title labels lettered in gold, gilt binding edges, red painted edges. With woodcut head-and tailpieces. XII, 515; (4), 456, (3) pp.

First edition of this important early book-collecting handbook that can be regarded als the predecessor of Brunet's manual (1810), by Jean Baptiste Louis Osmont (1710-1773). It is arranged alphabetically and lists the correct editions of over 7000 books, annotated with biographical information, notes on rarity and auction prices over the last 40 years. It had a large share in determining the character of later French catalogues of rare books. Osmont's title suggests and his preface states clearly that he was making a list of choice books suitable for a good private library as well as a list of rare books. Dedicated to the Marquis de Paulmy.

Good copy.- (Binding slightly damaged, some foxing throughout text).
