(6, 76), 305, (2, 1 blank) pp. Famous and lavishly illustrated book on the genealogy and victories of Stadholder Prince Maurits of Orange and Nassau. Jan Jansz. Orlers (1570-1646) was a nephew and pupil of the well-known secretary of the city of Leiden, Jan van Hout. He worked as a printer of books in Leyden between 1596 and ca. 1618. Then he became alderman and burgomaster of Leyden. In 1614 he published his famous description of Leiden (Beschryvinghe der stad Leiden). The original Dutch edition of the description of the victories of Stadholder Maurits (until 1609) was published in 1610, with enlarged reprints in 1619 and 1651, under the title Nassauschen Laurencrans; beschrijvinghe ende af-beeldinge van alle de victorien. A Latin translation appeared in 1616; a German translation in 1612, 1617, 1618; an English translation in 1613; the first French translation in 1612, and the third in 1624. The present edition is the second in French. The 1612 edition covers the period until 1609 with the same 43 plates as in all other editions. In the present 1615 edition of the French translation an extensive genealogy is added of the house of Orange with 13 half-page engraved portraits of menbers of this house, beginning with the Emperor Adolf of Nassau. Good copy.- (Some browning and foxing; some insignificant little tears in the margins of some plates, only one affecting the plate itself).
