The unfortunate Napolitan

Contemporary full calf, gilt and decorated raised spine with red morocco title-label lettered in gold. Full-page engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 16 full-page engraved plates, woodcut head- and endpieces, woodcut initials. VI, 484, 36 pp. Rare Utrecht edition translated from the French of this niceley illustrated popular and rather naughty picaresque novel on the adventures of the unhappy Italian Lucio Rozelli, born in Naples and who makes his way through Europe to end up in the Northern Netherlands. The story partly takes place in the Netherlands, at the Hague and Amsterdam, and at the end Rozelli ran a coffee house in Utrecht. The third part tells us about his death on February 10, 1719, and the reading of his last will. The first Dutch edition was published in 1710 at the same printer. The third and fourth edition appeared in 1722 respectively 1725, also at Jakob van Poolsum. French editions were a.o. published in 1708 (Paris = Hollande) and 1709 (Amsterdam). The last French edition was published in 1781 in 4 vols. with the title Aventures de l'infortuné Napolitain, ou mémoires du seigneur Rozelli . A pseudo-Rozelli story was published at the Hague in 1722. Good copy.- (Spine dam.; few minor defects).
