Goeree dated 1720 (same as in part I), title in red and black, 3 folding engraved maps, folding engraved plate, 2 full-page engraved plates, woodcut head- and endpieces and initials. The maps are by J. Keyser after H(erman) Moll. (26), 300 (i.e. 296); (2), 327 (14, 1 blank) pp. First Dutch edition of Oldmixon's The British empire in America (London, 1708) and the only edition of this work to contain the appended essay on coffee and coffee plantations including three plates showing the coffee tree. It was published anonymously as was the case with the English original edition. This Dutch version was translated from the French and edited by Rudolf and Gerard Wetstein The first part deals with the Eastern states of the USA from Hudson-Bay to Carolina and is enriched with 5 maps of New Foundland (1), New England, New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania (2), Virginia & Maryland (3) Carolina and Bermuda (4) and North America, depicting California as an island (5). The second part deals with the Caribbean islands such as Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Jamaica and the Bahamas and is adorned with 3 maps of Barbados (1), Jamaica (2), St. Christoffel, Antigua and an overview of the Caribbean (3). The author discusses the geography, history and economy of these regions. John Oldmixon (1673-1742) was an English historian. With this work, his earliest historical one, he supplies the first study of the British settlements on the American coast as a unified political entity. His first writings were poetry and dramas, among them being Epistles historical and gallant (1703) and a tragedy,The Governor of Cyprus., followed by some historical works such as The Secret History of Europe (1712-1715) and Arcana Gallica, or the Secret History of France for the last Century (1714).
