Rare first Swedish edition of a very interesting description and history of the West Indian Virgin Islands, together with an history of the communities of the Moravian Brethren on the Islands St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. Jean, which were flourishing since 1731. Christian Georg Oldendorp (1721-1787),  was instructed by his church to inspect the Moravian Communities on the Virgin Islands and to write their history. He sailed in 1766, and after he thouroughly explored the 3 islands, he returned home by way of North America to pay a visit to the new community of Penn at Pennsylvania. In 1769 he was back in Germany.
For years Oldendorp worked at his great history and in 1776 it was finished. The publication was enthrusted by the church to Johann Jakob Bossart, who rather freely adapted and edited the vast mass of materials presented by Oldendorp, and published it in 1777 under the title "Geschichte der Mission der Evangelische Brüder auf den caraibischen Inseln S. Thomas, S. Croix und S. Jan". The author vainly protested against Bossart's alterations, but still the work is of great importance, both for the history of the Virgin Islands as wel as for the history of the Moravian Brethren. The fine maps and illustrations were engraved after Oldendorp's own designs.

Good copy of a very rare edition.
