A highly controversial work on the papacy
OCHINO, Bernardino.Des hochgelehrten und Gottsaeligen mans Bernhardini Ochini von Senis fünff Bücher siner Apologen...Durch Christoff Wirsung verdeütcht. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Augsburg), 1559. 4 (of 5) parts in 1 vol. 4to. Early 17th-century flexible blindstamped vellum with initials I.S.I and the date 1611 in ink on front cover, traces of ties. With 4 title-pages. (8), 87 (1 blank); (85, 3 blank); (78, 2 blank); (86) pp. First German edition, translated by Christoff Wirsung (1500-1571) of Bernardino Ochini's Apologi nelli quali si scuoprano li abusi, schiocheze, superstitioni, errori, idolatrie ed impietà della sinagoga del Papa, first printed in Geneva in 1554. This work, a lenghty anti-catholic diatribe and apology, also received a much-revised German edition in five volumes under this title: Des hochgelehrten und Gottsäligen mans Bernhard Ochino von Senis fünff Bücher siner Apologen . The dedication by Christoff Wirsung is dated Augsburg, March 16, 1556. The Dutch edition (Dordrecht, J.J. Canin, 1607) was published under the title Vier boecken d. apologen. Bernardino Ochino (Siena 1487 - 1564>) was an Italian Reformer. At an early age he entered the order of Observantine Friars, and rose to be its general, but, craving a stricter rule, transferred himself in 1534 to the newly-founded Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. He had already become famous for zeal and eloquence, and was the intimate friend of the Spaniard Juan de Valdes of Bembo, Vittoria Colonna, Pietro Martire, Carnesecchi and others destined to incur the suspicion of heresy, either from the moderation of their characters or from the evangelical tincture of their theology. His reputation among Protestants was at the time so bad that he was charged with the authorship of the treatise De tribus Impostoribus, as well as with having carried his alleged approval of polygamy into practice. Good copy.- (Binding used and spine worn; numerous contemp. and later ownership's entries in ink on pasted fly-leaves and title; numerous contemp. marginalia and underlinings in ink; first title with tear and loosening with right margin sl. frayed; last page of part IV repaired with minor loss of text; last 2 blank pp. of part IV and part V missing, as usual).
