First edition of this satirical picture gallery of catholic abuses, in which the Austrian author Joseph Richter (1749-1813). who a.o. used the pseudonyms Obermayr and Pater Hilarion, depicts the religious customs of the day. With the use of copperplate engravings, Richter denounces what is problematic, contradictory, or lacking in these customs, and by so doing, he provides insight into the reformist impulses of the Josephine Enlightenment. Richter supports these reforms, and also characterizes customs as an evolutionary element; customs must continuously develop and accommodate themselves to changing religious and spiritual conditions.
