With fine engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved allegorical plate for the preface, and 95 fable illustrations and end-vignette on 48 full-page engraved plates (numbered 3-50) by Johanna Sibyklla Krauss. (4), 106 pp. Two fine fable books by the Krausses at Augsburg, with choice selections from contemporary French and classical fable authors respectively. The first book is illustrated by Johann Ulrich Krauss, the second by his wife, Johanna Sibylla Krauss, born Küsel. The Küsels, like the Krauss family, were active at Augsburg as engravers and goldsmiths all through the 17th and 18th centuries. Both our German artists, husband and wife, worked mainly after Dutch fable series: for the contemporary French fables mainly after the La Fontaine series of Hendrik Cause, and for the classical fables mainly after the Aesop series by Jan van Vianen. Both worked, however, most freely after their own imagination as well, so the illustrations are really of quite original invention. The first book of the convolute, with 52 fables of La Fontaine and other contemporary French fable poets, was published in French and German, the German translation being made by Balthasar Nickisch. The second book with 95 Aesopic fables was published in three languages, French, German and Italian. The Italian translation was provided by the celebrated Italian linguist Giovanni Veneroni (1642-1708), and the German translation was again made by Nickisch. Johann Ulrich Kraus together with his wife Johanna Sibylla Krauss-Küsel published and illustrated several fable books, among others a German edition of La Fontaine in four volumes, a German edition of Van Hoogstraten's Phaedrus edition with illustrations after Jan van Vianen, and a German edition of the famous fable fountains in the Labyrinth at Versailles. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; lower outer corner of final leaf restored with sl. loss of text; some sl. staining and thumbing).
Fabula Docet 96 (ed. 1715) and 45 (undated edition without text); cf. Thieme Becker 21, p. 439 ff (Krauss family) and 22, p. 73ff (the Küsels).
