Extremely rare first edition of the German translation of Jonker Jan van der Noot's Theatre, originally published in Dutch in London in 1568. It is a literal translation from the Dutch by Balthasar Froe and one of the main poetical works of Jan van der Noot, introducing the standards of Renaissance poetry in the Netherlands in an unprecedented way. At the same time the book played an important role in the rising genre of emblematical literature, especially in the Low Countries. Some insignificant soiling on the first leaves. Gorgeous copy, with the bookplate of the well-known book collector Robert Hoe, bound in a nineteenth-century bibliophile binding.
