Van Noort was the fourth to circumnavigate the globe and the first Dutchman to do so. His predeccessors were Magellan, Drake and Cavendish. Noort left Holland in 1598 with four ships with orders to attack the Spaniards and Portuguese and to harass them in any way possible. After many adventures Van Noort returned in 1601 with only one ship. The first edition of the account was published in 1601 with many re-editions to follow. A French translation appeared already in 1602; a French edition in 1610, testifying of the popularity of the text. The account was also incorporated in the collections of Commelin (1646) and Saeghman: this edition, which is in fact a re-edition of one of the editions by Lucas de Vries in Utrecht (1649 and 1652), the birthplace of Olivier van Noort. It is the first (and only?) edition with the full-page woodcut by Christoffel van Sichem on the verso of the title. Good copy.- (Spine worn and frayed; some underlinings).
