An expert on the art of acting

[NOMSZ, Johannes].
De tooneelspeler en zijn aanschouwer kunstmaatig beschouwd, of grondregelen voor beiden. Gevolgd van eene handleiding om zich in de tooneelspeelkunde te onderwijzen.

Amsterdam, W. Holtrop, 1791. 8vo. Contemporary wrappers. X, 11-171 pp.

First edition of a treatise on theatre by Johannes Nomsz (1738-1803), prolific playwright, theatre critic and translator. The first part of the work treats the groundrules for acting. The second part titled 'De noodzaaklijkheid van zich in de tooneelspeelkunde door eenen goeden meester te doen onderrechten, briefswijze voorgesteld' describes the necessity of learning the art of acting from a master, here presented in the form of letters. The content is mostly taken over from ''Observations sur l'art du come“dien'' by Jean Nicolas Servandoni d'Hannetaire. At the end an essay by Voltaire (originally titled 'Sur la police des spectacles'') ''Voltaire, over de handelwijze der regeering, ten opzigte der schouwtooneelen'' on pp. 166-171.
Nomsz produced quite a number of plays, all on oriental, historical, or political subjects. His plays were forbidden for a few years after the rise of the House of Orange in 1787. After this, his plays were always performed in sold out theatres, well into the 19th century.

Good copy.- (Library label ''Museum Willem Twee'' pasted on title and ms. ownership's entry on title; binding damaged; edges frayed; some staining).
