The library of a famous author and book collector

NODIER, Charles.

Paris, J. Techener, 1844. Large 8vo. Contemp. half blue morocco, spine gilt, red and blue mottled edges. (4), IV, VIII, 56, 24, 492, 28 pp.

Rare and important catalogue of books from the library of Charles Nodier (1780-1844), Romantic literary author and great collector of fine books. He was a loving bibliographer as well, and most items listed in the present catalogue are accompanied by cultural historical and bibliographical notes, sometimes of over one page. Nodier had already sold his library once before, in 1829, forced by personal circumstances, but afterwards he had started anew to collect with - if possible - still more care for the rarity and the beautiful get-up of the books, mainly literature.
The catalogue describes 1254 items, including not only old grammars, several Estiennes, dictionaries, Patois, Neo-Latin poets, French literature, poetry and theatre, but also a collection of Rabelais and macaronique, facetious, erotic and popular literature. The catalogue is preceeded by a biography of Charles Nodier, and a full bibliography of his works. All items in our copy have prices added by hand in red ink as well, but unobtrusively done. And an index of authors is added at the end.

Fine copy of an important book catalogue.
