First edition of this Dutch introduction to the history and culture of Japan by Evert Nijland (1854-1909), director of the Dutch Reformed secondary school in Utrecht. The work gives an introduction to the geography, history, politics, culture, religion and the Christian mission in Japan and is illustrated with a folding map of Japan and surroundings and 6 full-page plates, a.o. views of Deshima, the harbour of Nagasaki and a Japanese bedroom.
The frontispiece portrait depicts Guido Verbeek, missionary of the Dutch Reformed Church and professor at the university of Tokio.
