Rare account of the famous battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600

(8), 60 pp. Extremely rare original edition of this firsthand account of the famous battle near Nieuwpoort on the Flemish coast, fought on the 2nd of July 1600 during the military campaign under the command of the Dutch Stadtholder Maurits. This very well-known battle - every Dutch child knows the date by heart - was the turning point for the Dutch chances in the Eighty years' War. Hardly anything is known of the author Antonius Neomagus who lived from 1579 to ca. 1620 and who dedicated this book to Maurits and the States General. His dedication is dated March 1615. A second edition was published by Joh. le Maire at Leiden in 1617. Very good copy with a blind stamp the the Theological Institute of Connecticut on title.- (Bookblock half loose).
