Amsterdam, Michiel Colijn, 1632. 4to. Contemporary brown paper wrappers. Woodcut title vignette of two ships under full sail. (4) lvs.

Extremely rare Ordinance and code of signals for the ships sailing in convoy from the roadstead of Texel to the Sont and Norway. The captains of the participating ships had to sign and date the Ordinance and fill in their destination. Also the names of the 'Admiral', 'Vice-Admiral' and Rearadmiral had to be completed, as well as a password and answer.
In our copy all these data have been completed in a contemporary hand at the appropriate places: the destination of this convoy was 'Schagen' (Skagen, Northern Denmark) and the captains who entered their names were Henderik Indecop (?) and Pieter de Vries; Admiral was Sicbert Reijners; Vice-admiral Jacop Noormans; and Rearadmiral Aeltie Claes. The passwords are: 'Amsterdam' and 'Hooren'.The Ordinance is dated 18 April 1633 and signed by 'De schippers (the skippers's ... [servant, clerk ?] Marten Pietersz'.
The Ordinance contains eighteen regulations to guarantee the safety of the participating ships, imposing a substancial fine if violated. Included are regulations of behaviour of the ships at night, in fog, or in danger, including the prescribed signs (with lanterns and flags). The regulations are based on the Ordinance issued on 11 March 1632 by the States General.

Of the hundreds and hundreds different Ordinances or official State publications of this character, which must have been printed, only a very few have survived. We could trace only three copies of Ordinances for convoys to the North: printed resp. in 1627, 1647 and 17??; one for a convoy to Bayonne (1645), two for convoys to the West (1663 and 1695), and one without a destination (1628); the earlier ones are all printed by Michiel Colijn in Amsterdam.

Good copy.
