As a son of his father, Cornelis was destined to earn his living at sea, where he fought in many battles for his fatherland. Even though he was passed for promotion twice by Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt in favour of Michiel de Ruyter, Tromp never abandoned his fatherland. He even refused an offer to serve the French king for an astronomous salary. In later years, Tromp's feud with de Ruyter was solved and they became good colleages. After the death of de Ruyter, Tromp was considered the most prominent sea hero of Europe. Good copy.- (Binding very sl. rubbed, foxed, ms. entry in margin on one leaf).
