Only edition of a Calcutta printed poem
[NAVAL HISTORY - JAVA].The lay of Cornelis, in three Cantos. By an Officer who was present at the storm of the French Camp, at that place, 26th August, 1811. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Calcutta, Telegraph press, 1812. Contemporary half red morocco, spine gilt. With original folding manuscript map of the battle. IV, 64 pp. Only edition of this very rare Calcutta printed poem about the capture of Meester Cornelis, Java, in 1811. The present copy contains also interesting manuscript additions, and an original manuscript map, with a note signed P.T. (Col. P. Taylor), stating that it is a plan for Squire Holdsworth to read the Gazette by, and with a manuscript dedication by Taylor to Arthur Howe Holdsworth. June 1811 - Java was still under Dutch control, although incorporated into the French Empire - a British army sailed from India for Java to meet the Dutch at Meester Cornelis, about 6 miles from Batavia. After a fierce battle, the British took Java from the Dutch. The manuscript additions contain 4 poems on other battles. The author could be P. Taylor and this could be an author's dedication copy! But needs further investigation. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
