A gripping tale
[NAVAL HISTORY].Case of the Somers' mutiny. Defence of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, Commander of the U.S. Brig Somers, before the court martial held at the navy yard, Brooklyn. ![]() ![]() New York, Tribune office 1843. 8vo. Later half leather with blue boards. 30, II pp. First edition of one of several different accounts of the gripping tale. As Commander of the brig Somers, Mackenzie sailed in 1842 for the Africa squadron. During the passage, plans for a mutiny were discovered, with the intention of killing the officers and converting the ship into a piratical vessel. Mackenzie ordered the execution of three persons, including Philip Spencer, for their alleged participation. This document is Mackenzie's defense, which was successful: he was absolved of wrongdoing in carrying out the executions. Good copy.
