Second edition (first ed. Paris, François Targa, 1625) of this defense of great men of the past who were falsely accused of practising magic. The first English edition was published in 1657 by John Streeter in London. This famous book by Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653), who was librarian to the Cardinals Richeleu and Mazarin, was written in defense of the celebrated scientists accused of being magicians or sorcerers. Among the men defende by Naudé are: Cardanus, Geber, Lullius, Arnaldus de Villanova, Paracelsus, Agrippa von Nettesheym, Roger Bacon, Merlin, Nostradamus and Savonarole.
The work is divided into four categories; divine magic, white magic (concerning religion), black magic (witchcraft) and natural magic (astronomy, chemistry and astrology). The book is preceded by poems in honour of the author, among which a poem in Latin by Jacobus Gaffarellus and a tetrastich by Guy Patin are to be found.

Nice copy.- (Contemp and later ms. annotations in ink on inside of covers and first flyleaf; pasted bookplate of the Neander Library on inside of front cover; gently age-browned).
