VIII, 743, (2) pp. First edition of this interesting work on the history of early European intercourse in Japan starting around the year 1543 up to 1651, written by James Murdoch (1856-1921) and Isoh Yamagata (b. 1869). 1543 was the year that the Europeans first appeared in the Archipelago which resulted many years later in the expulsion of the Portuguese in 1639 and the virtual imprisonment of the Dutch traders on the artificial island of Deshima for the coast of Nagasaki in 1641. This work contains interesting information on the Portuguese Jesuits bringing Christianity into Japan on such a large scale that at one point over 150.000 souls were converted, of whom many were noblemen. Among the many other subjects: the Spanish rivalry with the Portuguese over Japanese trade; the English East Indian Company and the English relations with Japan; the peace negotiations between Japan and China; the different Japanese Emperors like Go-Daigo who saw a possible chance to emancipate themselves from the thraldom of the Rokuhara; the Japanese in Korea; the Dutch East Indian Company's embassies to Yedo. The book is concluded by an index which was printed in Tokio. The work was republished several times during the 20th century. Good copy with the ex-libris of Hans Heidner.
