Paris, Bordelet, 1754. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments. With one engraved map of the missions in Paraguay, by D'Anville, dated 1733. XXIV, 402, (4, 2 blank) pp.

First French edition of a history on the Jesuit mission in Paraguay, written by the non-Jesuit Muratori. It is one of the best sources for the history of the indians of the Rio de la Plata. The Jesuits used to have a lot of influence in the Paraguay area, they obtained almost supreme power. The fact that Muratori was not a Jesuit gave his work an extraordinary impartial character. He based himself for the most part on documents written by Jesuit missionaries and travellers, and on the letters given to him by Father Gaetan Cattaneo (1696-1733), a Jesuit missionary in Paraguay.

Good copy.- (Back cover dam.; tear in map; sl. waterst. towards the end).
Sabin 51419; Chadenat, p. 392; De Backer-Sommervogel II, col. 890 (under Cattaneo); Borba de Moraes, p. 603; JCB 1026; cf. Leclerc 1918 (1757 ed.)
