Allegory on Spain, the Netherlands & the Indies
[MULERIUS, Nicolaus].Verhael vande Occasie en(de) Oorsaeck waer door de Nederlanden gecomen zijn aenden Vreede Handel. ![]() ![]() ![]() (Amsterdam?), (1608). Small 4to. Modern wrappers, with part of the older blue paper wrappers still present. (7) pp. A rhymed verse version of an allegorical discourse in which a belligerent but cowardly Saint Peter (the Pope) supported by heavily armed Saint Jacob (Spain) attempts futilely to beat Saint Mark (Venice) out of the calendar to give a second day to Saint Jacob. Saint Jacob has lost part of his armour (the Dutch United Provinces) in a chess game at sea, "Zee Haens rovers" (the Dutch mariners, literally sea-cockerel robbers, but a Zee Haen is a kind of flying fish) are snatching away his golden shells (the Indies), and he fears they want to do more than "crack East Indian nuts." The poem at the end addresses the various lands in turn (the Netherlands, Venice, England, France, etc.) warning them to keep up their guard, and finally addresses Spain, saying if she had treated the Netherlands better she would still have them. The original prose version of the main poem appeared in both separately under the title Waerachtich ende Ghenoechlijck Discours (Knuttel 1411a & 1459) and at the beginning or end of two other pamphlets (Knuttel 1411 & 1444-1446), but at least some of those give no explanations of its symbolism. That makes the present verse version especially valuable. While the prose version appeared in some editions of pamphlets issued with all three editions of the Nederlandtsche Bye-Korf, only the present verse version was issued with the Bye-Korf as a separate pamphlet, and that only with the second and third editions. This suggests that the verse version appeared after Easter (9 April) 1608. It was banned with most of the Bye-Korf pamphlets on 27 August 1608. The order of the two verse editions is uncertain. Very good copy.- (Slightly browned).
Asher 27 or 28/28; Knuttel 1458; Tiele 672; cf. Simoni V 135 (other ed.); OCLC WorldCat (5 copies of the other ed. or possibly a mixture of eds.); not in Alden & Landis; JCB.
