The top of Dutch garden art: castle Heemstede near Houten
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Amsterdam), Widow of Nicolaas Visscher, ca. 1702. Oblong 4to. 19th-century half green cloth, marbled sides. Richly engraved title (nr.1) and 25 engraved views (nrs. 2-26) of the castle and gardens of Heemstede, a country estate near Houten, Utrecht by Isaac de Moucheron (measureing ca. 165/170 x 198/215 mm; 12-13, 25: 168 x 157 mm). 26 leaves First and only edition of this gorgeous print series of the estate (castle) Heemstede, near Houten, together with one of the most famous Dutch gardens drawn from nature by Isaac de Moucheron (1667-1744). The gardens belong with 'Het Loo', 'Zeist', and 'De Voorst' among the best of Dutch garden art. The country estate was bought in 1680 by Diderick van Velthuysen (1651-1716), a magistrate from Utrecht and member of a Utrecht patrician family. The House gave right on the title 'Heer' (Lord), and the ambitious owner greatly expanded the grounds to lay out a grand garden, shaped after the model of the Jardin des Tuileries at Paris. Loyal to William III Van Velthuysen shaped his estate as a political statement. Its architecture as well as the programme of statues, including many of the family of the Stadholder, and the layout of the gardens are a symbol of his loyalty and his own independent position in anti-Orangist Utrecht. Also the choice of the poet who wrote a long laudatory poem on the estate (Lucas Rotgans, 1691) was determined by this attitude as Rotgans wrote an important epic poem n honour of William III. The landscape round the house still shows signs of this splendid layout. The house, however, was damaged by fire in 1987 (now restored). Very good print series.- (Sm. tear in margin of title which is a bit soiled).
