(24), 725, (19) pp. First and only edition of the first work on naval and maritime history. Claude Barthélemy Morisot (Dijon 1592-1661), pupil of Cardanus, was one of the great intellectuals of his time and his works enjoyed great success. Orbis Maritimi is his main and best work. It is a extensive encyclopedia of everything relating to maritime affairs. The author shows great erudition, especially in the first part, in which he describes navigation in ancient times, travel in the middle ages and the great discoveries of the Renaissance. On a large double-page engraving an antique sea battle in an amphitheatre (a 'naumachia') is depicted. The second part is concerned with the navigation of Europeans. The great French, Spanish, English, Dutch and Portuguese expeditions to the coasts of Africa and North America are extensively described, North and South America being covered in two sections, and by three maps, including a curious map on p. 601. Several interesting details concerning recent discoveries are mentioned. There are also sections on the Arctic seas and on whaling, with an image of a whale and whaleboat in the Arctic sea. Leclerc writes that this is an "ouvrage fort peu connu et non mentionné dans Brunet, merite à beaucoup d'égards une place dans toute bibliothèque ou collection de voyage". Good copy from the library of the Carthusians at Villeneuve: library stamp on title.- (Binding sl. rubbed, first and last page loosening, browning and foing throughout).
