First edition of an important account of a voyage to Central America and Cuba by Arthur Morelet (1809-1892). Morelet, a French natural scientist, was the first to explore the vast territory of Guatemala, which was inhabited by the Itzas and the Locadons. He travelled through the region from November 1846 to February 1848 and described his observations and experiences extensively. In his report to the Paris Académie des Sciences of February 1850, Morelet indicated that he had deposited at the Museum 90 cryptogamic plantes, 150 species of molluscs which were described never before, 32 species of unknown fish, 104 reptiles, saurians, snakes, 70 birds and 57 mammals, but his observations are also of interest from a geographical, ethnological and archeological point of view.
