Amsterdam, Wed. Hulst van Keulen, 1818. Sm.8vo. Later half cloth. With large folding engraved plate showing a large ship in full sail with small numbers to all parts of its rigging, and two smaller sailing ships at its side, by A. de Winter after Johannes van Keulen. (4), 124 pp.

Popular school book for the student boatswain by Symon van de Moolen (1658-1741), teacher of mathematics and navigation at Amsterdam. The book includes numerous tables with the measures of all  parts of the rigging of a sailing ship, the description of all sea-flags, etc. Of special interest is the fine large engraved plate with the model of a fully rigged sailing ship,  size ca. 42 x 52 cm. This plate clearly depicts everything taught in the book, the text in the book referring to the small  numbers on the ship's rigging.
Originally published in about 1700 the book stayed in use for over a century, the present probably being one of the last editions. Still, as a popular and not very valuable school book, the work is very rare today, especially complete with its large engraved ship's model, which would often have been removed for use in schools, mounted and hung at the front of the class.

Good copy, from the famous navigation collection of C.C.C. Crone, with his bookplate.
Cat. Ned. Hist. Scheepv. Mus. p. 749; Anderson p. 110; not in The Crone Library; cf. Bierens de Haan 3361 (lists the title without mentioning place or date, so could not locate a copy).
