Amsterdam, Jan Albertsz., 1647. Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine, red edges. Woodcut endpiece and initials. (6), 264, (10) pp.

First edition of a posthumously published theological treatise on the inadequacy of infant baptism by Hermanus Montanus (1585-1639), who studied theology at Leyden university, and later became a Remonstrant preacher. On the basis of theological sources of the churchfathers and the Holy scripture he proved that infant baptism was unscriptural and that the ceremony was established as a general church custom in the fourth century.  Montanus mentions all those who were opposed to infant baptism through the centuries and the treatise is as such a compilation of the infant-baptism controversy.
A second edition appeared at Amsterdam in 1648, after which it was published several times.

Fine copy, with blindstamped library stamp on title ''Library Rochester'' and library stamp on lower edge '' Ambrose Swasey library'; name in manuscript on title-page "Howard Osgood"'.- (Binding sl. soiled).
