(8), 61, (3) pp. All six plays are edited and published by Ysbrandt Vincent (1641-1718), poet, play writer and the archivist of the Society 'Nil volentibus arduum'. The well-known Amsterdam Society for the arts ('Konstgenootschap) was founded in 1669 by Andries Pels and Lodewijk Meyer. One of the main purposes of the Society was to reform the practice of performing plays on the stage and to publish and perform plays. From 1702 on Vincent re-edited all the plays published by 'Nil' from 1669 onwards, in response to the many pirated editions printed and published by the heirs of Albertus Magnus. Some of the plays Vincent published for the first time: (3) and (5) in this copy. By his signature the Society granted the authenticity of the edition: in (2), (3) and (6) is a printed warning, signed by Ysbrand Vincent. (1) Enlarged second edition by Ysbrand Vincent of this play. The first edition was published by Albert Magnus in 1684. (2) Corrected and enlarged second edition by Vincent of this adaptation in Dutch of the comedy Le mariage forcé (1664) by Molière. In 1680 a translation of the play by A. Peys was published by Michiel de Groot in Amsterdam. The first edition of the adaptation was published in 1682 by Albert Magnus of which several issues exist. (3) First authorized 'Nil' edition by Vincent of this play that may be considered a plagiarism of Pieter Verloove's comedy Steil-oorige Egbert, of de twee ongelyke broeders (Amsterdam, Gysbert de Groot, 1690). The first edition of this plagiarism was also printed in 1690 by the heirs of Jacob Lescailje, which edition cann't be considered, however, as a 'Nil' edition. At the end (p. 64) is a stock-list of the plays published by 'Nil'. (4) Second enlarged edition by Vincent of this adaptation of two comedies by Molière: L'amour medecin (1665) and Le medecin malgré lui (1666). The first edition was published by Albert Magnus in 1680 (several issues). The edition is dedicated to Willem Hoofd and Maria de Wit. (5) First edition by Vincent of this adaptation in Dutch of the French play Merlin Dragon ou la dragone (1686), by Desmarres. The edition is dedicated to the famous Amsterdam magistrate Gerard van Papenbroek. There is a warning against pirated editions with a list of future editions by 'Nil' at the end. (6) Second (?) corrected and enlarged edition by Vincent (the first 'Nil', edition however) of this play by J. van Rijndorp. Vincent has incorporated this play in the 'Nil'-editions, without the consent of the author. The play was published in 1690 and 1715 with the name of the author on the title. Our copy has been in the possession of a certain D.C. Könneman who entered his name at the beginning or end of five of the plays, indicating where he was during his voyage to and stay in the Dutch East Indies (1785-1786), apparently on the moment that he finished the reading of these plays: (2): "op Cabo de Bone Esperance Sept. 20: 1785" (Cape of Good Hope, 20 September 1785). (4): "in Zee. op 40 Grad. Zijdr. breed 1785" (at sea at 400 southern latitude). (5): "Tot Batavia 6 Januarij 1786" (at Batavia (Djakarta), 6 January 1786). (6): "Op Mallaka. den 17 Junij 1786 (On Malacca, 17 June 1786). at the end: "Tot Batavia. Novemb. 30 1786" (at Batavia. 30 November 1786). Very good collection of these six 17th-century comedies.
Dongelmans, Nil volentibus arduum: documenten en bronnen (1982), (1): 118; (2): 40; (3): 74; (4): 30; (5): 7; (6): 52.
