The people of the world updated
[MOLHUYSEN, Philipp Christiaan].Aardrijkskundig leesboek tot uitbreiding der kennis van verschillende volken op den aardbol. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tweede verbeterde druk. Deventer, A.J. van den Sigtenhorst, 1838. Contemp. half calf, spine gilt, marbled edges. With large emblematic vignette on engraved title, and illustrations of the costumes of the main peoples of the world on 28 full-page engraved plates. (8), 412 pp. Second revised and enlarged edition of a school book on geography, richly illustrated with costume-plates, published anonymously by Philipp Christiaan Molhuysen (1793-1865). As the publisher relates in his preface, the book had first been published in 1822, and was then very well received by the press, with laudatory reviews in 'De Bibliotheek van Wetenschap, Kunst en Smaak' of 1824, page 88, and in the 'Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen' of 1825, page 87. The book presents a general historical and geographical survey of the world, treating the origin, organisation of government, religion, language, economic resources and means of substance, culture, customs, and costumes of the main people of the world. The plates were mainly based on the French 'Geography en estampes', and beautifully illustrate the various costumes of the world, mostly shown by two couples on one plate, and include the costumes of the natives of America, Africa, the Middle East, India, China, Japan, etc. On title is stated: 'Met 29 platen', but this includes the engraved title. The present second edition was brought up to date based on the latest exploration voyages. In 1822 the book cost Hfl. 7,-. Today the book is very rare. Good copy, with large folding calligraphed school-prize certificate by a private tutor, B.L.W. Mensing, presented to his pupil in the "Huize Oostbroek, gelegen aan den Straatweg tusschen 's-Gravenhage en Loosduinen", signed and dated March 26, 1849.
This ed. not found recorded; cf. Cat. De Koning 100 (1st ed. of 1822, also with 28 plates); Saalmink p. 1283 (idem).
