Amsterdam as commercial capital of the world
![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Pierre Brunel, 1710. 2 parts in 1 vol. 4to. Contemporary half vellum, ms. title on spine, edges sprinkled red & blue. Titles with woodcut vignette, of which the first in red & black. (4), 390 pp. Very rare French edition of an important treatise on the trade commerce of the city of Amsterdam. It accounts of the trade to the East and West Indies, of the goods and profits going in and coming out of the city, of the standards for measurements, weights and money and the change rates. In 1694 the first French and first Dutch edition appeared in resp. 16mo and 8vo. The second Dutch edition was published in 1704, and this French edition in 1710. What makes our edition special is the fact that it is published together with a treatise on the arbitrage and exchange rates between the principal villages of Europe and Amsterdam, by Jacques Mondotèguy. It gives interesting information about the trade with colonies of Spain, Portugal and other nations, in a period of history in which the Netherlands financed and possessed a fleet of over 8000 ships. Both parts have their own title page but the work of Mondotèguy only appeared in this version, published with the 1710 French edition of Le Moine de l'Espine. In its turn, this second French edition of Le negoce d'Amsterdam was the last French edition in this version to be published. The Dutch translation was reprinted many times during the 18th century, but always in a more extensive version. Good copy.- (Somewhat loose in hinges and sl. waterstained).
Cat. Goldsmith 4601; Hock, J. & P. Jeannin, Ars Mercatoria (Paderborn, 1991), II/L26.6 (mentions 3 copies); NUC lists 4 copies.
