Antwerp, Jacob Mesens, 1649. Oblong 8vo (11 x 16 cm). Contemporary vellum. With 55 etched plates. 56 ll.

Rare first and only Dutch edition of the Dutch adaptation of the Emblem or Fable book by Johannes Moerman, Apologi creaturarum which was published in 1584 in Antwerp by De Jode and Plantin. The plates are very close to the illustrations made by Marcus Gheeraerts and consequently they are now attributed to the Bruges master. Strangely enough his name is in contemporary handwriting on the spine of our copy, strongly confirming this attribution.

Margins a little bit soiled at places and plate 46 red ink-stained. Good copy.
