First and only edition of the Dutch translation of the famous travel book on Italy by François Maximilien Misson (1650-1722). Originally published in French in The Hague in 1691 with the title Nouveau voyage en Italie.Avec unemémoire, contenant des avis utiles à ceux qui voudront faire le même, it was the first general account of Italy that had appeared of its kind and it was considerably enlarged in the subsequent editions. The present Dutch edition of Misson is translated after the fifth French edition, and enlarged with the Remarks by Joseph Addison (1672-1719). Addison highly praised Misson's travel book, which had been translated into English and published already in 1695 (with a second edition in 1699). He had used it on his own travels to Italy in 1701, 1702 and 1703.
Addison's Remarks on several Parts of Italy were published in London in 1705 and translated into French in 1722. They added a wealth of detailed, mainly antiquarian, historical, literary and geographical information, to Misson's general account, which also gives very interesting information on his journey through Holland and Germany. Nowadays Misson's voyage to Italy is much sought after for its fine views and plates, showing a.o. on 2 fine large folding plates the costumes of Nuremberg and Augsburg.

Good copy.
Tiele 756; Cox I, p. 116 (French and English editions of Misson), and p. 121 (English and French ed. of Addison).
