Dordrecht, A. Blussé en zoon, 1789. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards, uncut. 10 folding engraved plates depicting the interiors of a porcelain factory, different tools, ovens etc. X, 238, (4, last blank) pp.

Original edition of the Dutch adaptation by Petrus Johannes Kasteleijn (1746-1794) of an extensive treatise on the porcelain factory or the art of making porcelain, originally written in French by the Count Nicolas Chritien de Thy de Milly. The most important new contribution by Kasteleijn is the insertion of the complete translation of a treatise by Père d'Entrecolles, superior-general of the French Jesuits in China who had also for the first time sent to Europe specimens of the true porcelain raw materials, kaolin and petuntse and a text by Entrecolles about Chinese porcelain. The work treats the origins and history of porcelain, the procedures in a porcelain factory, the tools that are used, the different stadiums in making porcelain like the baking, the making and applying of the glaze, the gilding of porcelain etc. This work is the third part in a series of many volumes named, Volledige beschrijving van alle konsten, ambachten, handwerken, fabrieken, trafieken, derzelver werkhuizen, gereedschappen, enz. ten deele overgenomen uit de beroemdste buitenlandsche werken; en vermeerderd met de theorie en praktijk der beste inlandsche konstenaaren en handwerkslieden, all written by different authors about all sorts of different arts, crafts, factories, tools etc. Preceding this third volume were the treatises on the making and applying of indigo, the blue dye, and the making of ethyl alcohol (spirit), hydrochloric acid and vitriol.
Good copy.- (Spine rubbed, front wrapper loose).
