All the costumes of the Dutch army in the 18th century
Orig. green board portfolio, in matching slipcase with orange lithographed oval title-label on frontcover. 157 lithographed plates of Dutch military uniforms, all handcoloured, and 3 extra duplicates. 157 lvs., and (3 lvs. extra), loose in cardboard box Extremely rare collection of lithographed costume plates, with fine and delicate designs of the uniforms of all sections of the Dutch army and navy, including the oversea's corpses in the Dutch East- and West-Indies, all nicely and brightly coloured. The present is the most extensive Dutch uniform-series ever published. It is however seldom found complete. Both Muller and Landwehr record the series complete with 156 plates. Muller later met with 7 supplement-plates, and in the Atlas Van Stolk the whole series is minutely described up to 165 plates. It seems to have been published in three successive parts, resp. plates 1-58 with the uniforms of the civic guards and voluntary chasseur corpes, plates 59-102 with the uniforms of the regular Dutch army, and plates 103-156 with the uniforms of the Dutch navy and the oversea's East- and West-Indian corpses. Also a collection exists with the plates in 3 separate slip-cases the first titled '' De schutter- en jagerkorpsen'', the second with the title 'Infanterie'', the third is titled:'' Kavallerie, Artillerie, Genie etc.', (Cf. Muller, Supplement 6481). Landwehr & Muller both mention 3 text leaves (not present in our copy; Atlas van Stolk does not mention any text). This copy includes according to the numbers of Atlas van Stolk: nos. 1-11, 13-15, and variant no. 14, 17-31, 33-101, 103-125, 127-134, 136-155, 158, 160-165. (=156 + 1 variant). Plates 133-139 are the army corps of the Dutch Indies, followed by plates 140-155 with costumes of the navy. Nos. 26 and 28 are variants. Nos. 34 is present in two variants. Extra: nos. 11, 29 are 113 present two times. Our set is one of the most complete series we have ever seen, and its original card-board portfolio-box with the present title was up till recently unrecorded. Fine set.- (Binding rubbed; variant of plate 11 cut out and pasted on paper).
Atlas Van Stolk IX, 6823; Landwehr, Col. Plates 320; Muller, Historieplaten 6481, and Suppl. 6481; not in Lipperheide; Colas.
