MIGNET, François Auguste Marie.Het Leven van Benjamin Franklin. Naar het Frans door G. Mees A.z. Een Volksboek, ter voorbeeld hoe men door eigen vlijt en deugd tot rijkdom en aanzien kan geraken. ![]() ![]() ![]() Deventer, A. ter Gunne, (ca. 1858). Sm.8vo. Contemp. gilt and richly blind-stamped purple cloth. With lithographed frontispiece-portrait of Benjamin Franklin by C.W. Mieling. XII, 175, (3) pp. First Dutch edition of a short biography of Benjamin Franklin, translated from the popular French historian François Auguste Marie Mignet (1796-1884), who wrote it for the "Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques", a kind of French counterpart to the Dutch Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen". In the preface, the Dutch translator is a bit critical about Franklin's admiration for Voltaire and he doubts if the letter Franklin wrote to Helvétius is as funny as Mignet seems to think. But on the whole he considers Franklin's life a good model and example for the Dutch illiterate, hence calling the book "Een Volkbook" (A Chapbook). Good copy, from the library of J.F. Buisman, with his ms. entry, dated 1939, on first free endpaper.- (Binding sl. discoloured; few lvs. loose).
