Titles printed in red and black and with engraved coat of arms of Leyden, full-page engraved dedication plate, 1 double-page engraved plan, 8 fine double-page engraved views, 8 full-page engraved views and 14 half-page engraved views on 7 plates. Most of the plates were engraved by J. de Beyer or J.J. Beylaerd after A. Delfos, 6 half-page views were engraved by C. Brouwer. Title printed in red and black and with woodcut coat of arms. (14),834,(26) pp (good large paper copy). First and only edition of one of the major descriptions of Leyden, with splendid, lively views. The second and third volume were edited and enlarged by Daniel van Alphen (1713-1797) after the death of Frans van Mieris the Younger (1687-1763). Includes the fine double-page views 'De stad Leyden, van de Schans Lamme te Zien' (profile of the city), 'Gezigt op het Raadhuis, langs de Breedestraat (...)', 'Gezigt op s'Graavensteen en Gevangenhuis (...)', 'Gezigt op de Groote Waag den Ryn, en L. Vrouwekerk (...)', 'Gezigt op den Leydschen Burg', 'Gezigt op den Schutters-Doelen (...)' and 'Gezigt op de Vischmarkt, en het Fontein (...)'. Good large paper copy.- (Vol. 1 occ. waterstained in lower outer corner; the 3 plates by C. Brouwer loose; 1 double-page plate loosening. Vol. 2 upper joint splitting at top of spine.
