Portraits of the Dutch sovereigns - From the library of Van Alkemade & Van der Schelling
MEYSSENS, Johan & Cornelis.Les portraits des souverains princes et comtes de Hollande.      Nouvellement reproduits en lumière. 1662. Small folio. Contemporary vellum with ms. title on spine. Engraved title and 39 numbered engraved portraits. The 40 engraved plates interleaved. Beautiful copy of series of portraits of the sovereign princes and counts of Holland and Flanders, by Cornelis Meyssens (1640-1672) after the paintings of his father Johan Meyssens (1612 - ca. 1670). Each prince or count is portrayed half-lenght with some 6 lines of French text and his coat-of-arms underneath. Father and son Meyssens were a good team and together they produced some beautiful series of portraits among which the present series is one of the most famous. This copy is from the well-known collection of C. van Alkemade and his son-in-law P. van der Schelling, two Dutch historians living some 50 years later and whose ownership signatures are on the verso of the second blank. Later this book was also part of the collection of the famous German collector Johannes Bernardus Nack whose engraved bookplate is on the inside of the frontcover. Beautiful copy of a rare work.- (Small, repaired tear in last portrait).
