The starting point of a German school on the creative and technical planning and designing of gardens
MEYER, Gustav.Lehrbuch der Schönen Gartenkunst. Mit besonderer Rücksicht auf die praktische Ausführung von Gärten, Parkanlagen u.s.w. ![]() Berlin, Riegel's Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1860. Folio. Contemporary half morocco. With 24 lithographed plates, 2 double-page, mostly printed in colours, showing plans and designs of gardens, and with some woodengraved illustrations and figures in text. (4) pp., 234 columns, (1) p. First edition of an extensive manual on garden-architecture, especially on the creative and technical planning and designing of contemporary gardens. The work starts with an historical- aesthetical survey of earlier styles, including the Arabic and Chinese garden-style, then to proceed to the basic principles and the means of realisation of the newer art of planning and designing the house and gardens. Part of the plates show plans of existing gardens, like the Villa Albani at Rome, the Villa d'Este at Tivoli, Versailles, Sanssouci, but most show examples of different styles, and models of new designing. According to Springer the work of Meyer did the same for Germany as that of Ed. Landré did for France. Together with the work of Jos. Lenné, it started a German school, and the Meyer-Lenné system was taught at all German horticultural colleges. Good copy of a great work.- (Binding rubbed; sl. foxed; stain on the 7 last plates).
Springer p. 86.
